Great foods for muscle recovery

Posted: Sep 22 2014

Every athlete will have different foods and supplements that they swear by when it comes to training, and generally we recommend that you always stick to what works best for you. If you have just started training, or you fancy trying something different to help your recovery then look no further, we have some great tips for aiding muscle recovery right here.

If you experience any swelling or pain after exercising then you need to find out why as soon as possible. Inflammation can often turn into a serious health problem, but you can aid your recovery from the beginning by eating anti-inflammatory foods that are high in omega-3 fats. These fats are found in flax seeds and chia seeds, which you can easily weave into your diet simply by sprinkling a few seeds over your cereal or adding them into a curry. Fish are also extremely high in omega-3 fats; salmon and herring are particularly high in these fats.

An extremely easy way of helping your body recover is by having small but regular amounts of coconut oil throughout the day. This oil contains medium chain fats which are absorbed into the bloodstream like a carbohydrate rather than a fat. This makes coconut oil wonderful for stamina, endurance and recovery. To consume this, use it as opposed to other types of cooking oil, or add it to your protein shakes. We also love coconut water, although it can be a bit pricey over here. Brands such as Vita Coco are available to buy at most supermarkets now, although other brands are also making appearances as well.

Finally, whey protein is essential for all athletes as it is one of the best products to help repair cell damage. This is due to the presence of the amino acid Cysteine, a powerful antioxidant which fights harmful free radicals in the body. This reduces cell damage and helps to break down mucus in the body. If taking whey protein is not your thing, then you can get cysteine in most high-protein foods such as turkey, chicken, granola and yoghurt.

Never starve your body of the goodness it needs. Eat well and train well; you'll be where you want to be in no time.
