Christian Wade, London Wasps and England, wears Chess London
Posted: Dec 28 2012
English rugby has had its ups and downs. An interesting and slightly depressing fact (for an Englishman) is that our first ever game was a loss against Scotland back in 1871. Thankfully things have progressed since then...
12 times grand slam winners, World Cup winners in 2003 with that unforgettable Jonny Wilkinson Drop kick, finalists in 2007, never mind ending the Kiwi's record winning run by handing them their heaviest defeat at Twickenham in November; England are a team who rarely let you down.
However, a 2011 RWC defeat to the French at quarter-final stage and with the Wilkinson's, Dallaglio's, Johnson's and Robinson's consigned to the history books, England are in need of some real stars to carry the nation forward to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Welcome Christian Wade; speed freak.

Initially focused on basketball then football and later athletics, due to his pace, his training partner was former commonwealth champion Julian Golding. After running 10.82 in the 100m at the English Schools Finals as a 16 year-old, Wade was faced with a choice of whether to continue with athletics or concentrate on another sport.
Some thought his height of only 5 foot 8 would stand in his way. As a rugby player, he would always be considered small for a sport increasingly played by giants. However, when spotted by a London Wasps Scout and offered a place at their academy, his hard work and the development of his game has proven his height to no longer be a factor. Needless to say, athletics loss is rugby's gain.

His pace, composure and physicality led to last season being his breakthrough year. Even though he missed three months with a serious abductor injury, he still finished the season as the Premiership’s second-highest try scorer.
In May 2012, Wade made his international debut for England against the Barbarians. Starting at number 11, he scored one and set up Jonathan Joseph with the last play of the game. This led England coach Stuart Lancaster to pick him for the summer tour to South Africa where Wade scored a hat-trick for the midweek side in Kimberley. You can place your bets now that England will have a real chance in New Zealand.
